Halo Engagement Rings

A halo rings the centre stone with a circle of small pavé diamonds. The effect is optical: the eye reads the whole bright shape as the stone, so a halo makes a centre diamond look roughly half a carat larger than it is. That is the entire commercial logic of the setting, and it is a real effect, not a trick of photography.

It changes how you should buy the centre stone. Because the halo adds so much sparkle around the edge, small compromises in the centre become much less visible — a colour grade or two lower disappears against the surrounding brightness. Money that would have gone into colour is usually better spent on cut, or on a larger stone.

What to look at instead: the halo diamonds themselves should be even in size and set flush, with no visible gaps between the halo and the centre. An uneven halo is the one flaw the design cannot absorb.

Halos suit round and cushion centres particularly well, where the circle echoes the outline of the stone. On elongated shapes the halo follows the shape rather than softening it.
