2 Carat Round Diamonds

At two carats a round brilliant is unmistakable: about 8.1 mm across, roughly a quarter more diameter than a one carat and more than twice the surface area. It is also where the price curve turns steep — a 2.00 ct commonly costs four to five times a 1.00 ct of the same grade.

Two things change at this size. First, cut precision stops being a preference and becomes the whole purchase: a large stone with a mediocre cut looks dull and heavy, and no colour grade rescues it. Insist on Excellent cut, with Excellent polish and symmetry alongside. Second, clarity shows. The table is wide enough that an SI1 feather can be visible from across a table, so VS2 is a safer floor here than it is at a carat.

This is also the band where lab-grown makes the largest difference to what you can afford: at two carats the gap against a natural stone of matching quality is measured in thousands, not hundreds.
