Lab-Grown Pear Shaped Diamonds

The pear is a shape people tend to want big. It is dramatic by design, and below about a carat much of that drama is lost — which is why grown material suits it so well. The budget that buys a 1.00ct mined pear will usually reach 2.00ct here, and at 2.00ct the shape finally does what it is supposed to do.

Scale, though, is unforgiving of a bad outline. Everything that is slightly off in a small pear is obvious in a large one: a point that leans off the centre line, shoulders that flatten instead of curving, a belly that looks pinched. Start with the 360° video rather than the report, sight down the long axis, and reject anything that does not look symmetrical to you at first glance. It will not improve on the hand.

Ratio is personal. Around 1.45 to 1.55 is the classic teardrop; longer looks more modern and slims the finger further, shorter reads rounder and softer.

Colour is where to save. A pear concentrates colour at the tip, but in a white setting an H is invisible to almost everyone — and it leaves budget for the clarity that a large stone actually needs.
