1 Carat Cushion Cut Diamonds

A one carat cushion measures about 5.5 mm square with rounded corners — more compact than a round of the same weight, because the cushion carries more depth. What it gives back is durability: no sharp corner to chip, which makes it the most forgiving shape for someone who never takes a ring off.

The thing to understand before comparing is that two different diamonds share this name. A crushed-ice cushion scatters light into many small glints and hides inclusions well. A chunky or modified cushion returns fewer, larger flashes and looks closer to a round. The certificate does not distinguish them and they photograph almost identically — the 360° view is the only way to tell.

Because both patterns break light up so thoroughly, a cushion conceals colour and inclusions better than most shapes. SI1 and colour I are usually safe at one carat, which makes this a shape where the budget goes further than the grades suggest.
